How to get to the American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of National History is in a prominent spot in New York. 

There are four entrances to the AMNH. 

All AMNH ticket holders can enter the museum from Central Park West (upstairs) at 79th Street or the 81st Street/Rose Center for Earth and Space entrance.

The museum members can use the member entrance on Central Park West at 79th Street (ground level, via the driveway).

School groups arriving by subway should enter through the entrance near the 81st Street B/C station.

You can use the public transportation network, ride-sharing services, or drive to AMNH. 

Here is how you can reach the American Museum of National History using the bus, subway and by driving! 

Getting to AMNH by bus

The M79 bus runs along West 79th Street across Central Park and stops at West 81st Street. 

A quick six-minute walk will take you to the Natural History Museum. 

The M7, M10, M11, M86, and M104 buses also have stops in close proximity to the museum.

Getting to AMNH by Subway 

You can use the B Line or, on any day, the C Line to reach the 81st Street subway station, located adjacent to the museum.

The 1 train stops at Broadway and West 79th Street, two blocks west of the Museum.

The West 79th Street subway station is about 0.3 miles (approximately half a kilometer) from the museum, and you can cover this distance on foot in roughly seven minutes.

For those seeking an accessible subway station, the 72nd Street station is the nearest option. 

This station is served by the 1, 2, and 3 train lines.

Getting to AMNH By Car

You can also choose to drive to the National Museum. Or you can take a ride-share or Uber your way there!

New York is very well connected regarding road network, but you might face traffic depending on when you visit the museum.

Car Parking near the American Museum of Natural History

American Museum of Natural History has parking right next to its entrance at 81st Street. 

The parking can be found between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. 

The garage is open from 6 am to 11 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 11 pm on weekends.

Parking charges are: 

  • $26 for one hour
  • $29 for up to two hours
  • $36 for up to five hours
