How to reach the Statue of Liberty

Are you planning a trip to the Statue of Liberty? Then you need to know how to reach the Statue of Liberty. 

The Statue of Liberty is a large monument on the Liberty Island. It’s part of New Jersey Waters but is considered a part of New York as well. 

The only way to reach the Statue of Liberty is by taking a ferry from either Battery Park, New York or Liberty State Park, New Jersey.

You do not have to book an individual ferry since all the Statue of Liberty tickets come with a round-trip ferry.  

In this article, we will discuss how to get to Battery Park and Liberty State Park to reach the Statue of Liberty. 

Getting to Battery Park, New York

Battery Park is the most convenient place to board a ferry to the Statue of Liberty. 

Address: The Battery, New York, NY 10004. Get Directions. 

It is located in New York and is well-connected via public transportation, making it the most accessible port. 

Parking is tough in Lower Manhattan, so public transportation is your best way to get to Battery Park. 

By Subway

1 and R trains stop at the South Ferry/Whitehall Street Station. And trains 4 and 5 stop at the Bowling Green Station. 

Both these stations are within five minutes of the Statue City Cruises ticket office. 

By Bus

Bus numbers M5, M15, M20, BXM18, M20, M15-SBS, QM 11, or QM 25 will get you to Battery Park.

You can get off at South-Ferry Terminal, Whitehall Street, and Batter PI. 

From here, you will see a sign toward the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island.  

By Car

You could drive or take an Uber to Battery Park. If you prefer to drive, don’t worry too much about parking. 

The Battery Place Parking is just a 4-minute walk from Battery Park. 

The address is 50 Battery Place. Parking here will cost you around $24 for up to 2 hours, $28 for up to 3, and $40 for up to 10 hours.

Getting to Liberty State Park, New Jersey

Getting around New Jersey using public transportation isn’t the best option. 

New Jersey isn’t well-connected in terms of public transportation, making it harder to get by in the city.  

By Light Rail

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail runs through the Jersey City and New Jersey area. 

You need to get down at the Liberty State Park station. 

The Liberty State Park station is a 1.6 km (1 mile) walk from the ferry terminal. You need to take a taxi or Uber there. 

By Uber or Car

Instead of changing transport options mid-journey, you can take an Uber. 

An Uber costs you $13, depending on where you start. It is the most convenient option. 

You could also drive. Liberty State Park has a lot of parking options you can choose from. 

There is free parking at the Liberty State Park parking lot, or you can use the paid parking for $7. 

By Bus

You can take bus numbers 1, 119, 6, 80, and 86 that stop near Liberty State Park. 

The closest bus stop to the Statue of Liberty is at Grand St. At Washington St. 

By Ferry

The best option across the Hudson is the ferry. 

You can get the Liberty Landing ferry from World Financial Terminal, New York, to Liberty Landing Marina within Liberty State Park, New Jersey. 

How to reach the Statue of Liberty from Times Square?

There are two ways to reach the Statue of Liberty from Times Square: 

You can take the bus number 149, 163 or 179 and get off at the NYC / Wall Street & Downtown, NY stop. 

If not the bus, you can take subway line 1 and get off at the South Ferry station. 

From there, it’s a short walk to Battery Park, and you can catch the ferry!

How to reach the Statue of Liberty from Manhattan

There are two ways to get to Battery Park from Manhattan:

You can take the subway line 4 and leave at the Bowling Green station. 

Or you can take subway line 1 and get off at the South Ferry station. 

It is a quick walk to the Battery Park ferry dock. From there, you can board the ferry to Liberty Island. 

Best Ways to Get to the Statue of Liberty

The best way to reach the Statue of Liberty depends on your preferences. 

Budget-friendly

The cheapest mode of transportation to get to the Statue of Liberty is public transport. 

This is a great pocket-friendly option for visiting the monument.

Fastest route

If you are short on time, consider taking a taxi to reach the Statue of Liberty. 

But remember that traffic in New York City can be unpredictable and may cause delays. 

If you take a taxi or car, we suggest you leave early in the morning or afternoon to avoid rush hour traffic.

Sightseeing

Walking to the ferry station is a great option if you have spare time and want to explore the city. 

You can visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and then walk to Battery Park, soaking in the city’s sights and sounds.

If you’re in New Jersey, you can walk around Liberty State Park or visit the Liberty Science Center before boarding the ferry.

Note: You must take a ferry to reach Liberty Island and Ellis Island. There is no alternate mode of transport to reach Lady Liberty.
